Summer Solace

Boston Common, July 2014

I’ve been spending a lot of time as a visitor in That Hospital.  You know the one.

But I have slipped outside the room, outside over-chilled hospital passages so wide that patients can be wheeled past each other on bulky stretchers, with room to spare for anxious, fast-moving throngs of family and friends.

Outside is the city I still love in summer: an architectural melange, families on the Common (I stop for several and offer to relieve the dad of his camera so the entire family will be preserved in their pictures), the light and color of ever-changing flowers broken into pieces by sharp shadow, animals in bronze and in life.

Summer solace.

  1. Beautiful thoughts, pictures, and al good deed for others .. Keep up the extraordinary writing. You didn’t include any “chaos” in the hospital. AM

  2. There is a sense of warmth and resilience throughout. Beautiful collection of pictures and I think they exemplify perfectly the beauty just beyond the door (and I agree about the over-chilling of hospitals in the summer: it can seep through to the bone).

  3. Ah! the ducklings and the swan boats! I was born in Mass., but only lived there 4 years. I do have photos of myself on the Commons as a tot; brought my children back when they were in their pre-teens, yes, in the summer.

  4. Hospitals stink. GOOD to get outside and refresh and see the wonder of life. Taking pictures and helping dads and throwing yourself into the throng of life – most wonderful. Hugs to you now.
